Free Peter Weir Film "The Way Back" at ACMI & Chats over Drinks

Details
Welcome to our 34th event!
Join us for the viewing of the film "The Way Back" (2010) by Peter Weir, the director of contemporary classics The Truman Show & Dead Poets Society, in the ACMI cinema, followed by drinks/snacks at Time Out Fed Square. Come and meet some new (or old) faces and enjoy the movie, some good company and conversation :)
"The Way Back" is a drama film based on the book of a former prisoner of war in a forced labor camp in the Soviet Union. The historical epic narrates the journey of a group of escapees from the Siberian Gulag walking 4,000 miles to freedom. The tale of courage and endurance is Peter Weir's final feature before his retirement. It pursues a recurring theme in the Australian director's work of people disoriented or displaced in alien physical or mental terrain, the idea of communities and how they function.
Book your own free ticket if you're a ACMI member, reach out to us if you'd like to use one of our few spare tickets, or we highly encourage you to become a member for $28 per year if you'd like to come back on other occasions as we plan to host more Meetups here soon. Please send a message after you've booked your ticket (or to request a spare ticket) to confirm your spot in the Meetup.
Meet at the entrance of the screening hall - ACMI Cinemas, Level 2 at 5.45 pm and say hi before the film, we'll then head inside to find seating together or in smaller groups. The film starts at 6 pm and lasts over 2 hours. It's ok if you can only make it then too. After the movie ends, we'll meet by the exit and head out for a drink next door at Time Out Fed Square.

About the film:
In deepest Siberia, in a gulag surrounded by impenetrable snowbound terrain, a young Polish national is sentenced to twenty years of hard labour. Almost as soon as he arrives, whispers of a prison break escape his lips sending him and a ragtag group of prisoners on an impossibly perilous journey through the harshest land, across unfriendly borders and into the unknown.
Befitting the director's lasting impact on the world stage, Peter Weir's final film is an epic cross-country journey spanning countries, continents and seemingly unsurmountable barriers. Jim Sturgess leads an overwhelming cast including Ed Harris, Colin Farrell, Mark Strong and a young Saoirse Ronan.
