"The Truman Show" Film at ACMI (Optional) & Conversation at Brunetti

Details

Welcome to our 36th event!

Join us for the viewing of "The Truman Show" (1998), a contemporary classic film by Peter Weir in the ACMI cinema, followed by drinks/dessert and chats at Brunetti Oro Flinders Lane. Come and meet some new (or old) faces and enjoy the movie, some good company and conversation :)

"The Truman Show" is psychological comedy-drama of a critical acclaim exploring simulated reality, surveillance, privacy, and visionarily predating a cultural obsession with reality television. The film depicts the story of Truman (played by Jim Carrey), a man who is unaware that he is living his entire life as a reality television show broadcast to the world. All of his friends, family and members of his community are paid actors whose job it is to sustain the illusion and keep Truman unaware about the false world he inhabits..

The film starts at 18.30 and lasts around 1h45, we'll meet by the exit afterwards and head to the Brunetti (5 min walk) to get there before 8.30pm. Meet at the entrance of the screening hall - ACMI Cinemas, Level 2 at 18.15 and say hi before the film, we'll then head inside to find seating together or in smaller groups.

If you've already seen the film or only wish to join for part two, that's ok too :) Please send a message to confirm your spot in the Meetup and let us know if you have your film ticket or which parts you'll be attending.

Tickets are $20 full price, $16 concession, $14 for members. We highly encourage you to become a member for $28 per year if you'd like to come back on other occasions as we plan to host more Meetups here soon (starting with other films by Peter Weir who is featured this month).

About the film:
Peter Weir's 1998 comedic triumph makes for a eerily prophetic vision of the near-future.
Truman Burbank (Jim Carrey) is the star of a television experiment: he does not know that since birth his life has been the centre of a television show called 'The Truman Show'. His wife has been cast, how workplace is fake and his entire world is one giant television studio. Gradually, Truman comes to suspect that there is something is not quite right.

ACMI Curator's note:
Following on from a string of very well received Hollywood films in Green Card and Fearless, Peter Weir rounded out the 1990s with a film that preempted the vibe that would define the decade ahead.
Written by Gattaca writer-director Andrew Niccol, The Truman Show strangely predicted the wave of immersive reality TV programs that would flood the market a few years later. In doing so, the film challenged audiences with questions surrounding ethics, privacy and consent. In truth, the film probably inspired Reality TV in some way, but in signalling what was to come, it also helped to prepare its audience.
