Mike Coykendall—Rootsy Folk on tour from Portland!
Details
Original songwriter, performer, highly recommended if you like...Townes Van Zandt, John Lennon, Gerry Rafferty, Neil Young (and covers of Roger Miller, Syd Barrett...)
Coykendall (pronounced “Kirk-in-doll") was raised in rural Norwich, Kansas; a lifelong musician. After relocating via SF to Portland, OR, he expanded his home studio and began working with other artists, one of whom was M Ward—and their first collaboration was Ward’s 2003 masterpiece Transfiguration of Vincent. Coykendall then joined Ward’s touring band (also with She & Him) and in 2012 Mike released his third solo record titled Chasing Away the Dots with its lived-in feel—the perfect vehicle for Mike's vocals. This tidy 'lil diamond in the rough featured M Ward, Zooey Deschanel, Eric Earley, & Ben Gibbard. Coykendall plays from Dots solo by rocking these songs with an oversized Kay electric guitar while stomping a tin can kick drum and swishing away on a huge set of high-hat cymbals. He began calling it the “rig”, and it stuck. Never working from a set list, Mike feels the vibe of his listeners to see what boundaries can be pushed. He continues to write, perform, produce, engineer, and wander away from Portland at times.
