WINDY HILL OPEN SPACE PRESERVE LOOP
Details
Distance: 7-8 miles, elevation gain 1,400 feet
About Windy Hill Open Space Preserve: Windy Hill was the first protected property of the Peninsula Open Space Trust and is now administered and maintained by the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District. Located in Portola Valley and named for its breezy grass-covered hilltop, it features open grassland ridges and forests of redwood, fir, and oak. Park hours are from 8:00 a.m. to dusk.
Hike Description: Our hike will be 7-8 miles with 1,400 of elevation gain. We'll go reverse of our usual hike-head up the Hamms Gulch Trail then down the Spring Ridge Trail for the views across the bay. The highest point on the hike, which offers simultaneous views of the coast and bay, is the top of a hill along the Anniversary Trail. Restrooms and picnic tables are available about midway at Skyline Blvd, where we'll take our snack break.
Directions to Preserve: Windy Hill Open Space Preserve is located in the Town of Portola Valley. The parking lot at the lower portion of the preserve is located on Portola Road. From Highway 280, exit Alpine Road in Portola Valley. Go south on Alpine Road about 2.9 miles to Portola Road (the first stop sign). Turn right on Portola Road and travel 0.8 miles to the parking lot on the left side of the road.
