Bald Bluff Hike

Details

Join us on a probably brisk day on January 26 to enjoy a hike starting at the Bald Bluff parking lot at 1:00. This parking lot is reached by taking Rt 12 northwest through Lauderdale Lakes to La Grange where you will go north on County Rd H to Young Rd. Almost immediately after crossing Young Road, the sign for the Parking lot for Bald Bluff Overlook and Natural Area will come into view.

We will meet here to start a hike of about four miles to another parking lot in the Palmyra Horse and Snowmobile Trails portion of the South Kettle Moraine. We will move a car to the end and do this hike just one way.

We will be hiking through rolling forest terrain, along steep narrow ridges, prairie remnants, past massive granite erratic boulder named The Stone Elephant. This was visited frequently and considered sacred by the Potawatomi Native Americans. It was called this by early settlers in deference to its color, size and general elephant-like shape.

The trip will be a good sampling of glacially formed elements: kettles, eskers, etc.

Please call or email Al to let him know to expect you.
