Fairmont Breakers Long Beach Hotel - top floor
In 1938, Conrad Hilton purchased the Breakers Hotel making it the 8th hotel in the Hilton Chain of hotels. One of the key elements of his renovation of the hotel was to convert the Penthouse floor into a fine dining restaurant he named Sky Room.
Sky Room soon became one of Southern California’s most popular restaurants as the views, food and Hilton’s policy preventing press from disturbing his guests enticed the most famous movie stars of the day including Clark Gable, Errol Flynn, Rita Hayworth, Cary Grant, and John Wayne to frequent the restaurant.
As popularity grew, the Sky Room was often referred to as the Rainbow Room of the west coast and rivaled the Brown Derby and Coconut Grove
With the US involvement in World War II following the attack on Pearl Harbor, Sky Room was called into service and served as the Airwatch Headquarters for the Long Beach harbor with two pill-boxes mounted on the cupola on the roof, one of which still remains.
Hilton sold the hotel in 1947 and though the hotel name changed, and décor was changed, the name of Sky Room stayed until 1964 when it closed following another sale of the hotel.
The following decades produced a series of transformations for the Sky Room with décor, food, style and purpose changing from Polynesian, to French Nouvelle to Traditional and even cocktail lounge and nightclub. The name, however minorly modified from Sky Room to The Sky Room to SkyRoom, remained iconic. The restaurant eventually closed in 1988 not to reopen for nearly a decade.
In 1997, the Sky Room reopened through a separate side entrance of the hotel with a new address that would take guests in a dedicated elevator to the top floor and into a 1930’s Supper Club style venue until April 30, 2018.
After many years and a full renovation, including the buildout of an extensive fine-dining kitchen, Sky Room is poised to return to its original glory. With elegance and refinement in the design recalling the glamour of the 1940s movie stars who made the space famous, paired with a classic but show-stopping menu featuring table side presentations, Sky Room aims to sweep guests off their feet.

Perched above the city in the iconic Sky Room, Afternoon Tea at Fairmont Breakers Long Beach is a timeless ritual reimagined. Savor a curated selection of premium teas alongside delicate finger sandwiches, house-made pastries, and elegant sweets, all served against a backdrop of sweeping views and historic glamour. Whether celebrating a special occasion or simply indulging in a leisurely afternoon, this refined experience invites guests to slow down and savor the moment.
