Drivers: please carry chains unless you have snow tires. This is a federal mandate to enter snow country within the park.

Ranger-guided snowshoe walks are a fun way to explore this winter wonderland while learning how plants, animals, and people survive the harsh conditions.

DIRECTIONS: after passing the entrance booth, drive around 5 miles to the park admin. building across from the Steele Visitor’s Center. When you come to the stop sign, make a left. If you have further questions, please ask at the entrance booth. Please plan to arrive around 12:15 a.m. If you arrive early, you may want to eat a small snack/light lunch before the snowshoe. After the snowshoe, we can head to Beckie’s for a late lunch/early dinner around 4 p.m.

The walk will start at 1:00 p.m. It will last two hours and cover 1 to 2 miles of moderate-to-strenuous terrain. The guides don’t follow a trail—the hike is an off-trail exploration through the forests and meadows along the rim of Crater Lake.

If the road to Rim Village is closed, the walk will explore the forests and meadows in the vicinity of Park Headquarters.

No previous snowshoeing experience is necessary. Snowshoes are provided free of charge, and there is no cost for the tour (apart from the potential winter entrance fee of $20 per vehicle if the entrance booth is staffed, which is rare in the off-season).

Participants should be in good physical health, and come prepared with warm clothing and water-resistant footwear. The walks take place rain or shine (or snow). Pets are not allowed on the hike.

Bring: winter-wear, water, protein snacks, lunch, $ for carpool/park entrance fee/Becky’s

Optional stop at Becky’s Cafe for dinner/refreshments on the return to Medford.

Please comment in the event if you have an SUV and are willing to carpool(drive). Also, please comment if you have a park pass.

This is a private group reservation, so please keep your RSVPs updated. Thanks!
