WVARA Winter Field Day
Details
Just wanted to pass along a summary of our Winter Field Day status at Sunset Beach State Park (January 23-25). Please let me know if anyone else is interested in participating. (I plan to post an open invitation on the chat reflector in a couple days.) And if you haven’t yet reserved a campsite, feel free to email me for recommendations.
At present, we are anticipating six HF stations and one VHF station as part of our operation.
Here’s the initial rundown of the station captains:
Jim CW station #1
Scott CW station #2
Max SSB station #1
Curt SSB station #2
Kevin CW/SSB station #3 (Saturday late morning to mid afternoon)
Vince Digital station
Tim VHF
Please input your station plans on our GoogleDoc spreadsheet at:

In addition to the Station Captains listed above, Bert will be available to assist with operating. John Glass will likewise will be assisting with the CW portion of Kevin’s station
At the bottom of this email is a map showing the locations of the reserved campsites.
Campsite reservations:
Site 46* (Friday & Saturday night) Jim
Site 48 (Saturday night only) Scott
Site 61 (Saturday night only) Curt
Site 63* (Friday & Saturday night) Jim
Site 64 (Friday & Saturday night) Bert
Site 66** (Friday & Saturday night) Tim**
* Kevin will only be radioactive Saturday morning/afternoon; he’ll set up his station in one of my two sites: 46 or 63
** Tim has reserved Site 66 for his VHF station, but won’t be staying overnight. So his site is available to others in the team. This seems like a logical location for Vince’s digital station
The big question is how to position our stations in order to minimize same-band interference. Even though we are all QRP, we want to minimize potential interference, and so we don’t want to have CW, SSB, and digital stations in close proximity simultaneously transmitting on the same band.
Some random thoughts regarding positioning stations to minimize interference:
If Vince’s digital station is at Tim’s Site 66, he will be well isolated from the other transmitters. Bert has reserved 64 which could likewise support one of our transmitters. Scott at Site 48 could potentially deploy a length of coax from his tent toward the northwest to get some separation distance between his antenna and the other transmitters at 46 and 61. I could put my CW station at Site 63 and maybe deploy my antenna toward the northwest as well. These are just my initial thoughts. Let me know what you think.
