Run by S.A.R.A.
Event: Fox Hunt (radio direction finding exercise)
Date/time: Saturday, June 13th; meet at 9:00 AM for briefing, hunt will run until about 11:00 AM
Where: West Valley College -Meet on the upper patio of the Visual Arts Building.
Skill/license level required: ANYONE can participate. No FCC license needed; no fox hunting skills required. All ages/skills are invited.
Equipment required: None. You can join a team with equipment. (Hint: most of the foxes were ultimately spotted by persons NOT using any special equipment!)

Some additional guidelines:

  • We expect to have as many as 8 foxes for this hunt (3 of mine and 5 by Morris).
  • NOTE! One of the Foxes will be on 70 cm! If you built a 70 cm Yagi, now is a time to test it!
  • Everyone is invited. If you have Fox hunting equipment (Yagi, TDOA, loop antenna, Pringles containers, 2M HT, etc.) bring it. If not, come anyway and join a group. Note: NO FCC license is required. No transmitting is required for a Fox Hunt and so there are no license requirements. No Fox Hunting skills required. Just join a group that SEEMS to know what they are doing! Anyone can join! The goal is to have fun and learn about antenna patterns!
  • We will have some extra equipment (Yagis, radios, etc.) that can be borrowed for the hunt.
  • If you have a yellow safety vest, please wear it. It will help us find each other and will help the public to recognize that we are an organized event.
  • There are no "rules" to the hunt. You can hunt by yourself or in groups. You can use whatever equipment you have available. Hint: Diana has found more Foxes using her eyes that we have found using equipment! Look when close! The most valuable "equipment" is good observational skills!
  • Meet at 9:00 AM in the upper patio of the Visual Arts Building. I will have extra copies of the attached (if you forgot yours) and will answer any questions. We will then start the hunt!
  • We will probably be done by 11:00 AM. Either you will have found the Foxes or be too frustrated to continue!
  • We will not have a pop-up or booth and so if you come late, you will have to find us wondering around campus. Hint: look for yellow vests waving Yagi antennas around!
  • The closest parking lot is Lot 7 on the far east side. It might have limited spaces due to construction work. There is a parking fee of $3. The meter will not take coin -- only credit cards or cash.'
  • The Electronics Flea Market is in Lot 2, and may offer free parking to buyers!
  • There will be a Farmer's Market in the northwest part of campus. Stay away from that area. There will be no Foxes hiding in that area.
  • The Theater is now under construction and so that part of campus is blocked off.
  • There is some poison oak on campus -- mostly in Vasona Creek. No Foxes will be hiding in poison oak; instead, the Foxes prefer to hide close to walking paths. You will NOT need to "blaze a trail" through brush to find a Fox (but you might find them hiding in open fields!) Foxes might be ANYWHERE else on campus -- they are sneaky!
