Traité sur la tolérance - Voltaire in the French Original

Last month we read Kant's and Mendelssohn's essays in response to the question: "What is Enlightenment?" Their ideas hinge on the "destiny of man" and are inexorably tied to the concept of "progress." On top of this, Kant and Mendelssohn both saw the increasing progress of the scientific disciplines as necessary for culture and education. Kant eschewed religious dogmatism and unfounded belief systems.

Both Kant and Mendelssohn wrote their essays not long before the French Revolution of 1789. What would Voltaire say about the Revolution? Unfortunately Voltaire died in 1778, eleven years before the revolution commenced. Here we are reading his essay on Religious Toleration to further understand the concept of Enlightenment philosophy during this pivotal time, viz., late 18th century Europe.
