How to Be a Game Master Course: Prep School

This course is for beginner and brand-new Game Masters only.

This is a hands-on learning experience — not a spectator event. If you’re not planning to GM, this class isn’t for you (but we love that you want to support your friends!).

Learn How to Be a Game Master (GM): 5-Session Beginner Course
Ever dreamed of running your own tabletop RPG but weren’t sure how to start? Whether you're drawn to fantasy quests, cozy mysteries, space operas, or spooky adventures, this beginner-friendly course will give you the tools, confidence, and support to become a great GM.

Join the Space Coast Adventurers Guild for a 5-part journey into the world of storytelling, collaboration, and adventure-building. Perfect for first-time GMs and curious players alike!

Course Schedule & Topics:
1. Prep School – June 7, 12:00–2:30 PM
Start strong! Learn how to run a Session 0, set tone and expectations, use consent tools, and prep a one-shot (that you can actually finish!). We’ll also show you how to read a published module, pick what you need, and ignore what you don’t. Bonus: quick, stress-free NPC creation!

2. The GM’s Toolbox – June 14, 12:00–2:30 PM
Master the tools of the trade: improvisation, encounter design, basic stat blocks, props, maps, pacing, and what to do when players surprise you. Build your GM “go bag” so you’re always ready.

3. Keeping the Party Together – June 28, 12:00–2:30 PM
Keep your table fun and functional. Learn how to manage group dynamics, resolve conflict, keep everyone engaged, and balance story with player choice. Drama-free tables, here we come.

4. New GM Game Day – Saturday, July 12, 12:00-4:00 PM & 5:00-9:00 PM
Put your skills to the test! Run a short one-shot in a safe, supportive environment with helpful feedback and lots of cheerleading, with two players potentially being one of your classmates and an experienced GM "coach". You’ve got this!

5. GM Graduation Mixer – Optional | Sunday, July 20
Celebrate your graduating class at our annual Birthday Potluck & Play! Meet new players, connect with fellow GMs, and maybe even pitch your next campaign.

• Course Fee: $80 (covers all four instructional classes + New GM Game Day). Includes handouts, prep materials, and support.
• Payment is collected at the first class (June 7) — cash or card accepted.
