Space is the final frontier. But it is time-consuming (decades), expensive (billions of dollars), and risky (explosions). From our first satellite called Sputnik in 1957 to the satellites that bring us Sirius/XM and Dish Network, space brings us great pride and utility but only at tremendous effort.
At least that's how the incumbents think. It's against this backdrop that a new wave of space startups, including Skybox Imaging, Spire Global, and Virgin Galactic, have come onto the scene. This new renaissance of space companies is shaking up the industry by building and launching satellites for 1/1000th the cost ($700,000 instead of $700,000,000). They are questioning some core assumptions in the aerospace industry and leveraging best practices from tech startups. Along the way, they've attracted the attention of mainstream tech companies (Google purchased Skybox Imaging for $500M in 2014). Join us on Thursday, October 15th for "T Minus Zero: Why Space Startups are Taking Off". Dan Berkenstock, co-founder and founding CEO, Skybox Imaging
Dan was the founding CEO of Skybox Imaging, which was acquired by Google last year. At Skybox, he led the company's business & product vision.
Barry Matsumori, SVP of Business Development & Advanced Concepts, Virgin Galactic
Barry Matsumori is responsible for all business development at Virgin Galactic, bringing over 25 years of experience in technology and business. He is also responsible for the development next generation products as well as long term roadmap.
Prior to Virgin Galactic, Barry worked for SpaceX as the Sr VP for Sales & Business Development. He also worked much of his career in mobile telecoms, primarily with Qualcomm; most recently serviing as VP for Wireless Connectivity.
Peter Platzer, CEO and co-founder, Spire Global
Peter Platzer co-founded Spire in 2012 with a vision to provide high frequency/high accuracy satellite-powered data from anywhere on earth. While Platzer is regarded as a pioneer in launching small form factor satellites into space, he is also known for his visionary leadership and was named a White House Champion of Change in 2013. Prior to launching Spire, Platzer trained at CERN, Max Planck Institute, interned at NASA Ames’ Space Portal, and was awarded an MSS from the International Space University, an MS in Physics from the Technical University of Vienna and an MBA from Harvard.
As a special bonus, we'll have SpaceVR demo units from 6:00pm-7:00pm for people to get to the edge of space in VR! SpaceVR is developing the world’s first virtual reality platform that will allow users to explore space with any VR headset. Our first step is to send a virtual reality camera to the International Space Station to capture immersive VR video of the Earth from space.
