The Analects of Confucius
Details
This Sunday, join us for a lively exploration of Confucius and The Analects. It is a philosophy centered not on abstract theories, but on the challenge of becoming a better human being and creating a better society. We will discuss Confucius’s ideas of jen (humanity and benevolence), li (propriety and the practices that shape civilized life), the ideal chün-tzu or “superior person,” and the tao, or right Way. We will also wrestle with some fascinating questions: Can good character be cultivated through everyday habits and relationships? How much should we restrain our natural impulses in order to live well with others? Can a society be governed through moral example rather than force? And what happens when our obligations to family, tradition, or authority conflict with what we believe is right? Whether you know anything about Confucius or are encountering him for the first time, come ready to question and connect these ancient ideas to contemporary life.
