It's speed dating, reimagined for language lovers. ✨ You'll leave having talked to more people than a typical exchange night usually allows.
How it works (may adjust on the night depending on turnout):
- 🕒 ~3 minutes per round — a bell/timer signals when to switch
- 🔄 Partners rotate through the evening (likely an "inner circle / outer circle" setup — one side stays, one side moves)
- 🌍 Language whole-round, alternating: one full round in your partner's language, then a switch to yours on the next round — practically, one round you're helping your partner practice, the next it's your turn. Exact rhythm may flex depending on group size and which languages show up
- 📋 Prompt cards on hand for each round as a backup if conversation needs a nudge
- 🎯 All levels and languages welcome — sign-in sheet helps us pair people up thoughtfully based on who's speaking what
Rough structure of the evening (subject to change based on turnout):
- Arrival & icebreaker (~15 min) – grab a drink, quick intro, note your language(s) on the sign-in sheet
- Speed rounds (~45–60 min) – a number of rotations, timing adjusted live depending on group size
- Open mingling (remaining time) – stick around and keep chatting with whoever you clicked with
Who should come:
- Anyone learning a language and wanting real conversation practice
- Native or fluent speakers open to practicing another language in exchange
- Speakers of any language looking for a reciprocal practice partner
Good to know:
- This first Speed Language Exchange is free as a thank-you for trying it out with us — from the next session on, there'll be a small fee to help sustain the format
- Group size will shape exactly how rotations work; smaller turnout may mean fewer, longer rounds instead of many short ones
- Come with a bit of patience for the first-run kinks — the goal is genuine practice, not a perfectly oiled machine
