What we're about

When you drain a bathtub, you see the water flowing out forming a spiral. Ancient Chinese people found that the energy moves in spirals and incorporated this knowledge in Qi Gong. The American Zen teacher Charlotte Joko Beck also said that each of us is like a whirlpool in the river of life. Since everything (inanimate, animate and even events) is a manifestation of energy and the very nature of energy is constant movement, everything keeps changing, as Buddhism teaches by 'Impermanence' and 'Dependent Arising'. But we also hope to be always calm and clear in our mind amid the comic energy doing all the wonders through us. So, this is a group for those who practice staying still and mindful through spirals of life.

In a Friday meetup, we will study a book or philosophy such as 『Everyday Zen』 or 『Dao De Jing』 (『Tao Te Ching』). If you have something you want us to learn together, please let me know.

In a Saturday meetup 'Mindful Connection', we borrow the format of Thich Nhat Hanh's sangha meetings in order to practice mindfulness while enjoying each other's company. When we meet, we will first meditate for 15 minutes. Each person meditates in whichever quiet way (s)he likes, and you may even pray to your God. And then, one volunteer at a time shares whatever (s)he wants to, within a speaking turn of about 3 minutes. We will keep a 'talking stick' on the table, so whoever wants to speak picks it up. You can share your little 'a-ha' experiences, thoughts, questions or some personal challenges you are going through at the moment. On finishing the turn, you put the talking stick back on the table. No matter whether you share your life or respond to the previous speaker, before each time you open your mouth, you will pause for a couple of seconds and organize what you try to say. Then, you speak slowly, calmly and clearly. You use all yet only the words you need to use, to make the message clear and compact. The rest of the group will stay fully present through the whole process, and we will understand that a quiet but attentive listening itself is compassion and support, for which words are not necessary. We believe that we can connect without filling the air with constant chatting for the sake of chatting. To make sure that I know what I am going to talk about and why, instead of broadcasting my mental talk real time, is a respect for the others' precious time and energy.

You may attend one meetup as a guest, but, from the second time, a SD county resident is asked to join the group and sign up for a meetup. Thanks for your understanding and cooperation.
