Kaaterskill Falls + Last Chance Cafe
Details
Moderately difficult + ice | 1.8 miles | 2-3 hours | 400 feet hellevation gain
Kaaterskill is a 260-foot, 2-tiered waterfall that's especially magical in winter. The base is often thick with ice, which the cascading water cuts straight through before flowing below on its way to the second tier. More adventuresome hikers can climb the ice mound and explore the falls from behind--one of my most memorable hiking experiences ever.
The trail itself isn't particularly long, but it will be icy, especially near the water. Microspikes 1000% required.
We'll head to the observation platform first for an eye-level view of the falls, then make our way down to the base where spray from the falls coats the terrain with ice and things can get very treacherous. You'll be fine with microspikes, but even better with trekking poles.
After taking in the magic, we'll return to the parking lot and head to Tannersville and Last Chance Cafe -- a fan favorite for its charm and 300+ beers.
Hope to see you in the Catskills!
