Online Meeting: Meaning (Redux)

Details

The last meetup about Meaning was hijacked by us talking about the election, so let's try this again.

Join us for a conversation about meaning

Psychologist Victor Frankl believed that meaning was the primary driver of human motivation, instead of just pleasure and social status. Studies have shown a connection between a sense of meaning in life and psychological well-being. Meaning has been defined as "a response to a hidden potential that adds value to the world and the person that responds to it." It can come from performing a work or deed, experiencing something (art, nature, love), or from one's attitude towards difficulties and suffering.

Frankl believed life always has meaning, but that meaning is not fixed but "changes man to man, moment to moment." In contrast, the dominant cultural worldview is that life has no objective meaning, but people create their own meaning. Some spiritual philosophies do believe life has objective meaning; whether it's to do good, foster relationships, utilize one's strengths, serve God, etc.

Questions to consider:
- Do you believe life has meaning?
- What brings a sense of meaning to your life?
