*Heavy Rain or high winds will cancel this event. This event is at your own risk. Please join Nat Pine and friends on an easy hike. This is meant to be an easy hike with stops along the trails. We will be traveling at conversation speed for about 1 to 2 hours. This time of the year you might need sun screen, bug spray, walking poles, and water. Please dress appropriately in layers for the weather. Along the trails there will be views of Lake Massabessic (that you don't get to see other times of the year on these trails). Please be aware, there will be photos taken at and during this event. If you don't want your photo taken, please don’t attend this event.
Massabesic Lake covers around 2, 561 acres and provides the drinking water for Manchester, NH so there is no swimming. The lake holds more than 15 billion gallons of water and is 5.6 miles long with a width of 1.3 miles. The average depth of the lake is 196 feet and there are 6 main islands around the lake and several smaller islands. The main islands are Grape, Fletcher, Brown, Birch, Picnic and Loon. The name Lake Massabesic came from the Native Americans and it means “the place of much water.” One of the most famous chief’s of the state, chief Passaconaway was killed on Lake Massabesic. He was in a canoe headed to Loon Island. The chief had memories of Look Island from when he was younger. A thunderstorm came along and lightning hit the canoe and the chief and the canoe instantly disintegrated. During the American Civil War, NH troops gathered, camped and trained around Lake Massabesic before participating in the war. There is a section of the lake called Battery Point with building remains.
