July 2014 Monthly Meeting: Childhood [Note change in date—July 11]

Details

Our competition theme for July is “Childhood.” Remember when life was simple and new? Show us what it means to be a child with images that evoke the essence of childhood or directly feature children or toys.

Our presenter and judge for July is Pam Moxley. Her presentation is entitled "The Thin Line.” It is about advertising and self-promotion as an artist while still maintaining artistic integrity.

Pam Moxley, a self-taught artist, has spent the last twenty-one years pursuing her fascination with photography and mixed media. She is best known for her taut black and white and sepia-toned images, which are simple in composition yet complex in theme. Her works are inspired by her own childhood and watching the growth of her four children. Each of her works is created to remind the viewer of his or her own time as a child, when life was embraced with unbridled moxie.

After finishing with the photographic component of her work, Pam continues the artistic process using several other media. Her mixed media works are individually created with multiple layers. She starts by painting a dimensional board with several layers and textures of paint. She then uses an image transfer process that she has developed to add the photograph to the board. Pam finishes each of the works with a poured layer of high gloss resin. The combination of these techniques brings each of these individual works of art to life. Mixing the distress of the transfers with the brilliance of the resin creates a beautiful mix of nostalgia and high concept polish.

SPS Monthly Meetings (First Friday of each month) are for its members and guests. While competition entries at these monthly meetings are restricted to currently paid-up members, we ALWAYS welcome visitors interested in photography to attend. The Learnshops (Fourth Tuesday of each month) are intended for members, but again, we welcome visitors. If you attend regularly, we ask that you help support the club (which pays for the rental of the facilities, supplies, and equipment) by becoming a member!
