Photographing Water in Nature - with Larry Winslett

Details

Please join us for our monthly meeting on Friday, May 2, featuring accomplished photographer Larry Winslett, and enter our digital image competition, "REFLECTIONS" (more information below).

Larry says: "Water is one of nature's most mesmerizing subjects and takes many forms - rivers, lakes, oceans, snow, rain, and more. It grabs our hearts and minds, inspires and relaxes us. So, how do we document this wonder of nature in a powerful way? From stopping action to producing those silky cotton candy scenes, there are professional techniques to ensure outstanding images."

In this talk, he will discuss:

  •  Location and perspective
  •  Direction and speed of water
  •  Camera settings and creative shutter choices
  •  The importance of a tripod
  •  Managing exposure with neutral density filters
  •  Managing glare and reflections with polarizers
  •  Protecting your gear
  •  Experimenting with composition

In this presentation Larry will share proven techniques, show beautiful water images and inspire you with the skills to take your own images.

Larry Winslett is an award winning nature photographer who has chronicled the natural world in many parts of the United States and Canada. He has specialized in the regions’ wildflowers, animals, rivers, and streams. He is particularly noted for his work featuring the three major granite outcrops in Georgia—Stone, Panola, and Arabia Mountains. His photographs have been featured in a variety of publications, such as Sierra, Wilderness, and Wild Mountain Times. They can also be seen in four permanent exhibits at Stone Mountain Park. His fine art prints are also displayed in such diverse locations as Stanford University and Cox Communications, and his work has been the focus of major exhibits at Stone Mountain’s Memorial Hall Museum and the Fernbank Natural History Museum. His photos have also been used by the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, the Georgia Poetry Society, and the Dahlonega Chamber Music Festival.

Larry leads workshops and tours all over North America. He teaches photography and Photoshop at the Atlanta School of Photography in Atlanta, GA, the University of North Georgia’s Continuing Education Department in Dahlonega and Cumming, GA, and the John C. Campbell Folk School in Murphy, NC. He has been a frequent judge and presenter for photography at the Audubon Society, the Southeastern Flower Show, the Photographic Society of America’s international photography competition in Chattanooga, TN, and for many photography clubs around the southeast.

Using his photographs to help make a difference is one of Larry’s passions. As a leader in environmental organizations, Larry has effectively used his photography in support of many major environmental issues, especially on the protection of native biodiversity and its habitats in Georgia’s National Forests, Stone Mountain, and other endangered places in the U.S. and Canada.

SPS has three standing meetings each month for its members and guests. The First Friday meeting features an guest speaker and a members’ image competition. While competition entries at these monthly meetings are restricted to currently paid-up members, we ALWAYS welcome visitors interested in photography to attend. The Learnshops (fourth Tuesdays) and Coffee & Critique (second Saturdays) are intended for members, but again, we welcome visitors. If you attend regularly, we ask that you help support the club (which pays for the rental of the facilities, supplies, and equipment) by becoming a member!

Signing up on the SPS Meetup page does not make you an SPS member. SPS members pay dues to engage in many activities that are unavailable to guests who only sign up on the SPS MeetUp.
