Session 1:
John Lewis Digital Platform - from 10 to 7000 deployments a year!!!
(Alex Moss, Partner & Product Engineer)
How do you go from 10 to 7000 deployments a year, at one of Britain’s oldest, largest, and most popular retailers?
In 2017, John Lewis had an eCommerce monolith with only 10 deployments a year. We committed to building a new Digital Platform hosting Microservices on Google Cloud. By 2019, we had 22 teams deploying over 4000 times a year. We’ve continued to mature and extend the platform with a range of features to help Product Teams ship software to delight our customers quickly, safely and reliably.
We’d like to share how we’ve done it - the tech we’ve chosen, the features we’ve built, and how we’ve measured its effectiveness for our Engineers.
Session 2:
Sustainability in Engineering
(John Abel, Technical Director, Office of the CTO at Google Cloud)
Sustainability has become a corporate objective as a key aspect of ESG (Environment, Social and Corporate Governance). It is essential that we look at how technology engineering / development can have a positive impact on reducing carbon emission.
John will describe principles that guide developers / engineers on reducing their carbon emissions, while still building amazing products / solutions.

Speakers
John Abel is a developer turned innovator. His focus is driving customer success blending new technologies such as Blockchain, AI, Internet of Things with existing, deployed, systems to help make ideas become not just reality, but commercially relevant.
John works within a diverse team drawn from multiple backgrounds and skill sets to ensure synergies of different perspectives working together comes to the fore. John also supports a number of STEM projects that are aimed at increasing participation overall but particularly from a wider range of backgrounds.
John began his technology career nearly 30 years ago, working on early AI and even distributed ledger technologies that were deployed to great impact in private and public sector environments. His expertise across many roles within Oracle and now Google in security and data technologies have led to him being a renowned industry speaker, author and commentator on technical and business innovation issues.
Alex Moss
Alex Moss is the John Lewis Partnership's Cloud Engineering Lead and a recovering Cloud Architect. He was part of the first team to bring johnlewis.com into the cloud, and now works across a number of teams aiming to improve our platform engineering and help our developers go faster, safely. Outside of work, despite mostly trying to keep hands-on with the technologies he loves, he is more often found creating Duplo masterpieces with his young son!
