SRE MUC Wies'n Edition

Details

We're co-hosting our Wiesn event. This time around we will be meeting at Nordcloud in their Highlight Towers location Let's all meet up again, talk about reliability, exchange ideas and see where we can continue to learn on our journey as site reliability engineers (and folks that aspire to be one!).

Meetups are about engaging within the community, so we are looking to everyone to share ideas and learn to ultimately to reduce the risk of disasters.

Please help to spread The Word! Feel free to post this event on social media using the #sremuc hashtag!

You can reach the organizers at muc@sre.xyz (Ideas, Presentations, Comments)

Speakers & Abstract:
Talk 1: OpenTelemetry in Kubernetes
In this session, we will explore whether and how OpenTelemetry can transform infrastructure monitoring within Kubernetes environments, either as an alternative to or in conjunction with Prometheus. We’ll also discuss how infrastructure and application monitoring together can form a comprehensive observability solution in the context of Kubernetes. Additionally, we’ll examine the evolving landscape of Kubernetes monitoring, including the role of vendor-specific agents and the potential risks of vendor lock-in. The talk will conclude with practical strategies for deploying OpenTelemetry agents using Helm charts, Kubernetes operators, and vendor-managed solutions.

Nadya Shakhat is Cloud Architect at Nordcloud

Lightning Talk: Internal Cloud Platform (Piotr Hajdas, BMW AG)
Piotr will provide a brief intro of the BMW Standard Cloud Platform for AWS, a strategic platform to host standardized workloads.

Piotr Hajdas is Project Lead Internal Cloud Platform (AWS) at BMW AG

Lightning Talk: SRE Topologies (Ingo Averdunk, IBM)
There is not just one way to do SRE. In this session, Ingo will introduce various SRE topologies, highlighting the diverse ways organizations can implement SRE practices to meet their needs.

Ingo Averdunk is Distinguished Engineer at IBM

Panel: What type of SRE are you? What type of SRE does your project need?
Join us for an engaging and insightful panel discussion on the multifaceted world of Site Reliability Engineering. Our expert panelists will share their unique perspectives and experiences, shedding light on the various ways SRE can be implemented within organizations.

  • Embedded SREs: Learn about the role of SREs who are fully integrated into development squads, working closely with developers to ensure reliability from the ground up.
  • Centralized SRE Function: Discover how a centralized SRE team can provide operational support across multiple development squads, streamlining processes and fostering consistency.
  • Center of Enablement: Explore the concept of an SRE Center of Enablement, where the focus is on empowering and enabling teams with the tools, practices, and expertise needed to enhance reliability and performance.
  • Kitchen Sink Approach: Understand the "Kitchen Sink" approach to SRE, where teams adopt a flexible and diverse set of practices tailored to their specific project demands and organizational needs.

Panelists:
- Karsten Petersen, Principal Cloud Operations, tado
- Piotr Hajdas, Project Lead Internal Cloud Platform, BMW AG
- Dušan Okanović, Enterprise Sales Engineer, DataDog
- Ingo Averdunk, Distinguished Engineer, IBM

Moderator: Richard Zimmermann, CTO, Nordcloud
