When all think alike, then no one is thinking
Walter Lippman
Groupthink happens when the desire for harmony leads to uniform thinking. In the pursuit of unity, members may agree at all costs, suppressing conflict, critical thinking, and creativity. Some say this can result in irrational or even dangerous decision-making.
Examples include stereotyping outsiders, silencing differing opinions, and vilifying dissenters.
A famous case? The Titanic disaster. The ship’s captain ignored multiple ice warnings, trusting the company’s claim that the Titanic was unsinkable. Groupthink also led to fewer lifeboats—owners felt they weren’t needed and would obstruct passenger views. Even as the ship sank, many passengers hesitated to board lifeboats, believing in the myth of its invincibility.
How does groupthink affect us today? From families, religious beliefs, workplaces to social movements, it shapes decisions in ways we don’t always realize.
Join us as we explore its impact and discuss how to think independently—together!
