Valmeyer Historic School and Walking Tour SATURDAY

In 1993, Valmeyer, IL flooded. The village residents' decision to move the village 2 miles east to higher ground and their successful move, "is seen as a potential model for other localities retreating from sea level rise" (wikipedia). "They are really a textbook example of how a town can recover, start over and thrive after devastation – Nicholas Pinter" (BBC article cited below).

The tour will begin at the old one-room schoolhouse of Valmeyer (relocated to new Valmeyer) where they have exhibits on early Valmeyer, a village founded in 1857 by the Meyer family and incorporated as a village in 1909.

We will then have a walking tour of "old" Valmeyer, "The old townsite has been described as a ghost town with few inhabitants". (wikipedia). Our docent is Dennis Knobloch, who was mayor of Valmeyer in 1993. Dennis told me the group would have to keep him in check as far as length of time during the walking tour of old Valmeyer - he says he can talk for 5 minutes or 5 hours or anywhere in between depending on what we want. I told him maybe 60-90 minutes!
