Maeystown Mill and walking tour Friday
Details
NEW event.
Will do again: 2029
Cost: $10
Hopefully the weather will cooperate in November! Maeystown makes our boundary now that I have shifted the boundary to being a 30-mile radius around Forest Park. Maeystown, IL is in the extreme south of our boundary.
What we'll do:
- Orientation talk on history of Maeystown
- Wicks organ demonstration (docent really wanted us to include this, I told him we likely would not sing - although we have sung for Dan Fuller at Bellefontaine and for the Priest (in Polish!) at St Stanislaus).
- Visit 1859 School House, originally a parsonage and church
- Guided walking tour of village Includes 1859 stone mill and the one-lane 1881 stone arched bridge
- Tour of Corner George Inn Bed and Breakfast. Totally restored frontier Victorian Maeystown Hotel & Saloon, tour includes Maeystown General Store and antique-appointed guest rooms including a summer kitchen guest cottage, two sitting rooms and the original 1880’s ballroom.

"The entire village, save for a small strip of land on the northeast side, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the Maeystown Historic District.
"The history of the tract of land where what is now Maeystown is situated, began sometime after 1782, when a soldier of the American Revolution, one James McRoberts, staked a claim of 100 acres.
"Maeystown may be said to have begun its growth as a town in the year 1852, when Jacob Maeys built a sawmill on what had become known as McRoberts Meadow, which he purchased in 1848. For a year after its construction the mill remained idle, on account of there not being sufficient water to drive it. Steam engines were then put in place, and the mill successfully operated. The first store was opened in 1858 by Jacob Maeys in partnership with Judge Abraham Poston." all from Wikipedia. Additional history on Maeystown here:
