Dialogue with the Fed: Blockchain, Cryptocurrencies and Central Banks
Details
The Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis is holding a talk on blockchains and cryptocurrencies in their Dialog with the Fed series. This is the second talk by David Andolfatto, vice president of research at the St. Louis Fed. I attended his first talk[1] back in 2014, and was pleasantly surprised by his ability to see past the headlines of the day and grasp the core concepts. As a recap, in 2014...
- The price of Bitcoin opened at $770 and closed at $330 (feeling familiar?)
- MtGox collapsed
- Dorian Nakamoto was "exposed" as Satoshi
- U.S. Marshals auctioned off the first of the seized Silk Road bitcoin (to Tim Draper)
- Ethereum launched their crowdsale, selling over 50 million ETH for 25,000 BTC (if you participated in the crowdsale, the relative value of your ETH has increased 114x!)
It was not Bitcoin's finest year. I'm very interested to see how his perspective has evolved over these last four years, with the ups an downs the community has had and the explosion of other cryptocurrencies.
