Goethe's FAUST (1960)
Details
“The aging scholar Faust is bored with earthly knowledge. He is tempted by Mephistopheles, who promises Faust earthly delights, including carnal knowledge. Eventually, Faust becomes smitten with Gretchen, an innocent village girl, pledging anything to win her heart.”
The film records Gustaf Gründgens' legendary performance as Mephistopheles in the 1957 production he himself directed. It is considered the definitive portrayal of the charming demon. Those who recognize Gründgens as German cinema's stock villain, or the Nazi collaborator caricatured in Klaus Mann's 1936 novel “Mephisto – Novel of a Career” and its 1981 film adaptation, will find it intriguing.
