On Thursday, November 17 at 7:30 pm, Professor Steve Okulewicz from the Geology and Environmental Sustainability Department of Hofstra University, will do a presentation on “Iceland: Land of Ice.” Widespread glaciers first appeared ≈ 700,000 years ago in Iceland. There are 269 are named glaciers, covering 11% of this land. More land is covered by glaciers in Iceland than in all European countries combined. Melt-water from these glaciers has created more than 10,000 waterfalls some of which are utilized for hydroelectric power. Learn how these large and massive blocks of frozen water form and sculpt this majestic landscape into sharp peaks and deep valleys in Iceland’s mountains.
