DESCRIPTION: Hike through the Tule Elk Reserve to Tomales Point in Point Reyes National Seashore. Hike from Historic Pierce Point Ranch on the Tomales Point Trail to the coastal cliffs at Tomales Bluff overlooking the Pacific. Enjoy lunch at the end of the bluffs. This will be a 10 mile out and back route, with a total ascent of 1,350 feet (gradual inclines). On a clear, non-foggy day the views of the ocean, shorelines and the Tule Elk are spectacular. There are no guarantees for a clear day, but I think the odds are on our side. Optional out and back at the end of hike to McClures Beach which is .4 mile from the parking lot. We will hike down the series of cascades to enjoy the beach after the hike (0.8 mile out and back). This is a beautiful secluded beach often used for negative tide hikes. There porta-potty toilets at the trailhead. There are other bathrooms on the drive in along Pierce Point Road at the various trailheads to the seashore. Flush toilets are available at Bear Valley visitor center.
DISTANCE: This hike is rated somewhat strenuous hike with approximately ~9.7 miles and cumulative ascent of ~1,335ft. Average moving speed will be 2.5 to 2.8 MPH. Not suggested for hikers hiking less the 15miles/week.
MEET: 9:30Am at The Tomales Point trailhead is at the very end of Pierce Point Road, park at Pierce Point Ranch or along the road just before it. There is no parking fee. We will gather at the Tomales Point Trailhead at Pierce Point Ranch. Trail will be Tomales Point Trail to tomaes Point and back along the same trail to parking lot.
DIRECTIONS: take Sir Francis Drake Blvd from San Rafael to Olema. Turn right on Hwy 1 for one block, then turn left on Bear Valley Rd. Drive through Inverness. Make a right at Pierce Pt Rd, and follow it to its end at Pierce Point Ranch / McClure Beach parking . (Be sure to allow at least 40 minutes from Olema to trail head.) Parking is free.
Please be prepared with at least two liters of water, snacks, layered clothing, hiking boots/shoes, sun screen and hat. Pack a lunch. If you normally use trekking poles, you may wish to bring them along. Current weather forecasts suggest mostly clear skies, 60 to 70 degrees and a 15MPH breeze. Please check your favorite weather site for more details and updates prior to hike. Porta Potty toilets are available at the staging area. No water is available at trailhead or anywhere on the hike.
