The Age of Diagnosis?
Details
In an age of unprecedented access to healthcare, diagnostics, and pharmaceuticals, are we blurring the line between essential medical care and the pathologisation of normal human experience
The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) is the standard classification system used by mental health professionals in the US, but it faces significant and long-standing criticisms. Newer additions are accused of Pathologising every day life and labelling normal variations in mood, behavior, and personality as mental disorders. There appears to be a narrower range of Human behaviours which can be tolerated or considered normal. In the past these outliers may have been called misfits or eccentric however it is often these individuals that can stimulate major changes in human development across art and Science. Are we losing a tolerance for such diversity?
