Years after a promotion to Starfleet Command, Admiral Kirk re-takes the captain's chair of the newly-refit U.S.S. Enterprise after a deadly probe of unknown origin sets its course for Earth. Kirk's crew reunion is short-lived as he immediately clashes with his executive officer, the brash Decker, and contends with his former science officer Spock's mysterious and guarded return.
While still a mammoth technical achievement in 1979, Robert Wise's full directorial vision was restored in 2001 in the original Director's Edition. This 2022 version showcases its analog wizardry while also further integrating digital effects work, delivering the most comprehensive version to date.
