[Reading Group] METR's Frontier Risk Report
Details
This week we will be discussing the Frontier Risk Report recently published by METR! This report stands out as the first independent safety evaluation of the top labs’ most capable internal and public models, which is a step forward from previous evaluations that have mostly focused on pre-deployment models.
In the report they attempt to evaluate the risk of rogue deployment by frontier AI models by assessing their “means” (what harmful actions agents could take), “motive” (why they might try), and “opportunity” (whether attempts could succeed given safeguards). While they concluded that current models were only plausibly capable of small-scale rogue deployment, they warn that this could change within months given the rapidly advancing capabilities.
We will discuss both this new format for model evaluations as well as their findings. The discussion will benefit from participants having read as much of the report as possible, but reading the overview thread should be enough to get a decent grasp.
