[Reading Group] Data Centers in Space?
Details
SpaceX has asked US regulators for permission to launch up to a million data-centre satellites, and Google, Blue Origin and a crowd of startups are chasing the same idea. Is this the future of AI compute or an expensive fantasy?
This week we’re discussing Forethought's article published in May this year covering this topic: Will We Really Put Data Centers in Space? It takes an in-depth look at how likely it is we'll see advanced AI chips orbiting the earth in the coming years. For the technically minded, there’s launch economics, cooling in a vacuum and what radiation does to GPUs. For everyone else, there’s the bigger picture: what happens to AI governance when compute leaves national jurisdictions, and when one company controls both the cheapest route to orbit and a frontier AI lab.
Please read the main article before the event (you can skip the appendices). If you’d rather listen, there’s an audio version on the page.
