Architecture and Interior Design Fika Meetup (Tuesday)
Details
The topic of this meeting is:
Architecture & Philosophies:
Part 4: Minimalism "Less Is More".
Minimalism in architecture has its roots in early 20th-century Modernism, while Minimalism emerged as a distinct movement in the visual arts during the 1960s.
Minimalism developed as a reaction against the complexity, ornamentation, and excess of modern consumer culture. In architecture and interior design, minimalism focuses on simplicity, reduction, and the essential — how space, light, proportion, material, and emptiness can create meaning without unnecessary decoration.
Rather than asking what can be added to a space, it asks: What can be removed without losing what makes a space meaningful?
Does a minimalist space need to feel empty and restrained to be considered successful, or can a space full of objects, memories, and personal expression be just as minimal in spirit if everything has a purpose?
Who decides what is essential — the architect, the designer, the client, or the person who inhabits the space?
Does minimalism create freedom, or does it impose a new set of rules about how we should live?
Can removing too much erase the soul, history, and identity of a place?
Is minimalism a rejection of consumerism?
Now that AI can generate the perfect minimalist interior in seconds, is the architect's real challenge knowing what not to remove?
