Aura by Carlos Fuentes
In April we will be discussing your thoughts after having read the novella “Aura” (1962) by Carlos Fuentes.
"Aura" is a short novel by Mexican author Carlos Fuentes that blends elements of magic, the occult, and gothic romance to explore themes of youth, love, and the passage of time. The story follows Felipe Montero, a young historian who responds to a newspaper advertisement seemingly tailored for him, leading him to an ancient, desolate mansion inhabited by the enigmatic Consuelo Llorente and her beautiful niece, Aura. As Montero becomes immersed in his task of editing the memoirs of Consuelo's deceased husband, he finds himself drawn into a mysterious web of desire and identity that blurs the lines between the two women.
Fuentes's work is acclaimed for its mythic and symbolic depth, positioning "Aura" as a significant exploration of the interplay between the past and present, and the mystical forces that shape human experience. (EBSCO review)
