Elixir Diversity Meetup

Fellow alchemists,

It's finally time to get together again, this time in a slightly different format.

Studies show that diverse teams perform and deliver better, yet unfortunately the IT industry still has a long way to go in this area. Let us reflect on the importance of diversity in the Elixir community while listening to our special guest Gabriella. We will then of course follow it up with some Elixir action!

Our aim is to bring people from different backgrounds and seniority levels together in a welcoming and friendly atmosphere. Hence, we would like to especially welcome people from commonly under-represented groups.

18:00 – 18:30 – Diversity with Gabriella
Current research shows that diversity in teams gives a bonus in the knowledge economy. Join this seminar and learn more about this and about what type of diversity that is important for team success. Learn also about pitfalls in homogeneous team, when it comes to information sharing and collaboration. The seminar will also describe important prerequisites that enables a team to reap the benefits of diversity.

18:35 – 19:00 – Brief introduction to Elixir with Anna
We will take a short look at the history of functional programming and how Elixir fits into the picture. We will introduce you to the main concepts of the language and what problems it helps to solve. If you have been looking for a functional programming language to work with - this is a perfect opportunity to make up your mind.

19:05 – 19:30 – Rapid Application Development in Elixir with Dragos and Howard
We will cover the tools and libraries which can be used to develop an Elixir application rapidly. There will also be short tutorial (live coding), developing a REST API application using Plug (https://github.com/elixir-plug/plug) and Swagger (https://swagger.io/).
