SICC Screening #40 – Universal Language @ Bio Tellus

Details

Can you ever truly belong in a place where your past feels like a foreign language? Join us on Tuesday 13th May at Bio Tellus for a special screening of "Universal Language", a poetic and personal film that reflects on identity, belonging, and the invisible threads between cultures.

A favourite of the SICC team from last year's Stockholm Film Festival, as always we will show the film with English subtitles, and gather after the screening we’ll gather to connect, unwind, and talk it over.

About the Film:
Universal Language is a quietly powerful exploration of heritage and displacement, directed by Matthew Rankin. Set in contemporary Montreal, the film follows a group of young people from Guinea, Iraq, Syria, and beyond, as they begin to find a sense of community, memory, and meaning in a place far from where their stories began.
Blending documentary elements with moments of surrealism and humour, the film plays with the idea of what it means to "belong"—not just to a country, but to a language, a story, or a shared history. Visually inventive and emotionally resonant, Universal Language invites you to see the world through the eyes of those still finding their place within it.
