SICC Screening #49 x OKO Voices from Ukraine – Flowers of Ukraine @ Bio Tellus
Details
Have you ever wondered what resistance looks like when it blooms? For our next event, we’re honoured to partner with the OKO Voices from Ukraine Film Festival for a special screening of Flowers of Ukraine, the deeply moving yet hopeful new documentary from Adelina Borets. For this screening, we will also be honoured with a visit from the visiting filmmaker and Festival Director from Kyiv, Tetiana Staneva.
As always, the film will be shown with English subtitles, and we’ll gather afterwards in Tellus cozy café bar to connect, and chat about the film together over some Ukrainian soup!
About the film:
In "Flowers of Ukraine", director Adelina Borets returns to her childhood home in Kyiv to capture her mother’s beloved garden — a lush sanctuary filled with vines and flowers that have grown and intertwined over decades. But when the Russian invasion begins, this place of beauty and memory is suddenly threatened, and the camera becomes both witness and shield.
What starts as a portrait of a mother and her garden slowly transforms into a powerful meditation on home, resilience, and the quiet defiance of everyday life in the face of destruction. Through intimate imagery and restrained emotion, Borets creates a testament to all that endures — and all that is at risk of being lost.
The film has resonated with audiences across Europe for its raw honesty and quiet strength, earning praise for its humanity and its courage to look unflinchingly at the cost of war.

ABOUT OKO NORDIC:
Flowers of Ukraine is part of the OKO Nordic: Voices From Ukraine, taking place in Stockholm Nov 27-30.
OKO invite you to four evenings of powerful ethnographic cinema from Ukraine that may change how you SEE yourself, the world, and your place in it. 👁️ OKO means “EYE” in Ukrainian.
The films, blending art and anthropology, are a selection from the OKO International Ethnographic Film Festival, born in Bessarabia, Ukraine, in 2020, as a bridge between cultures and a tool for information resistance. The screenings are part of a broader experiential format. Next to exchange with visiting ethnographers, filmmakers and artists, for those willing, there will also be an invitation and chance to practice connection and presence. Each event is designed to help us step out of the ordinary and toward solidarity and co-accountability.
