SICC Screening #55 – The Voice of Hind Rajab @ Kulturhuset
Details
On 7th April, SICC and Kulturhuset have arranged a special screening of one of the most powerful and widely discussed films of the past year: The Voice of Hind Rajab, the deeply moving new work from acclaimed Tunisian filmmaker Kaouther Ben Hania.
As always, the film will be screened with English subtitles, and we’ll gather afterwards in a nearby bar to meet, connect, and chat about the film together.
About the film:
In The Voice of Hind Rajab, a group of dispatchers working at the Palestine Red Crescent emergency call centre receive a devastating call: a six-year-old girl is trapped inside a car in Gaza after an attack that has killed the members of her family. As the operators struggle to keep her calm on the phone, they race against time to coordinate a rescue through layers of bureaucracy, unstable connections, and the chaos of war.
Directed by Kaouther Ben Hania, the film blends documentary and fiction in a strikingly original way, incorporating the real audio recordings of Hind’s calls while actors portray the aid workers trying desperately to reach her. The decision to keep the violence largely off screen - focusing instead on voices, faces, and the fragile phone line connecting them - creates a tense and deeply human chamber drama that many critics have described as both devastating and unforgettable.
The film premiered in the main competition at the Venice International Film Festival, where it won the Grand Jury Prize. It has been widely praised for its emotional power and bold storytelling, and was nominated for major international awards including Best International Feature at the Academy Awards and Best Non-English Language Film at the Golden Globe Awards.
