Maurice Merleau-Ponty (1908–1961) was a French philosopher known for his work in phenomenology and existentialism. He emphasized the importance of the body and perception in shaping human experience and knowledge. For this month's meetup, we will read his essay The Primacy of Perception, where he summarizes his arguments, making the case that consciousness is not detached from the world but deeply embedded in bodily experience and lived reality. Merleau-Pontys thought remain influential in fields as varying as psychology, art theory, and political thought.
The essay is 31 pages and is published in a book with the same name. The book can be found for free via this link: https://tinyurl.com/merleau-ponty
If you want a quick summary of his life and work, the In Our Time podcast episode on Merleau-Ponty is an optional listen. https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m002974s
We hope you will join us at the meetup to discuss the essay and the philosophy of perception
