Many of us read in fragments: a few pages, a message, another tab, another thought interrupted before it has fully formed.
Silent reading together creates a different kind of space: one hour of sustained attention, shared with others but without the pressure to speak. We each sit with the same texts in our own way, noticing what resonates, what unsettles us, what we disagree with, and what we want to think about more deeply.
Then we come together and talk.

For this session, we’ll read three short letters by Seneca:

Letter 7 — On Crowds
How much are we shaped by the people around us? When does company enrich us — and when does the crowd quietly hijack our judgment?

Letter 9 — On Philosophy and Friendship
If the wise person is supposed to be self-sufficient, why do we still need friendship? Can we love others deeply without becoming dependent on them for our sense of self?

Letter 10 — On Living to Oneself
What does it mean to be genuinely at home in your own company? Is solitude freedom, self-knowledge, retreat — or sometimes just hiding?

Together, the three letters move through a simple but enduring question:
How do we remain ourselves among others, form deep relationships without losing our independence, and still be able to stand comfortably on our own?

We’ll spend one hour reading silently together, followed by one hour of open discussion around the passages, questions, disagreements, and connections that emerged.

Practical note: please either print the three letters beforehand, bring an e-reader/tablet/laptop, or bring your own copy of the book Letters from a Stoic / Moral Letters to Lucilius.

This is a members-only event. Annual membership for 2026 is 50 SEK (payable at the door). If you’d simply like to join us for this event, a 30 SEK guest fee applies instead.
