Join us for a special Mother's Day event as we hike through time. We have created a unique route that will take you from it's early years leading up to present day.

Our easy to at times moderately challenging loop hike will total about 8-9 miles in length. We will utilize a wide variety of trails, include a very short stretch of easy off trail to complete our loop. As part of our loop, we'll follow the 4 mile long route of the Mount Gretna Narrow Gauge RR.

Grubb, Coleman, and Dick

Peter Grubb, an English Immigrant, started the iron tradition in this area during the 1700's due to it's excellent iron-ore bearing rock in the mountains, free-flowing streams and a ready source of combustible fuel. He sold out to Robert Coleman, a true industrialist, who profited the most from the woodlands and the area as a whole. The Colemans owned a number of slaves, one of whom was called Richard.
Richard was renowned for his superior intelligence, character, and skill as a mason, being hard-working and well-liked by his fellow workers and masters. Later on he skilled in charcoal production. Those with whom he worked nick-named him ‘Guv’nor’ (still an English term of respect); hence *Governor Dick*—the name stuck.

Points of interest during our hike include the site of Governor Dick's cabin and a spring cased in masonry said to be his own work, Gretna's cottages, LV Rail Trail, old RR station ruins, remnants of the narrow gauge RR, and so much more.
