Case Studies: Creating Effective Commercial VR/AR Projects

What does it take to create great virtual reality projects and get them funded? What are the biggest challenges? What are the opportunities in this field?

In the past years, large companies such as Facebook, Google, Microsoft, Sony and HTC have made large investments in Virtual Reality hardware and content creation, mostly to be used as entertainment. However, these tools have the potential to serve humanity in much profound ways, such as data visualization for complex processes in the natural sciences, and historical reconstructions/simulations in the humanities.

For this panel, we'll bring together the creators of outstanding VR projects that have been showcased by NASA and the Smithsonian Museum; Shayna Skolnik and Robert Cloutier.
Shayna is co-founder and CEO of Navteca, a woman-owned technology company headquartered in Greenbelt, Maryland. Navteca's core focus is creating practical applications based on new and emerging technology, such as cloud and virtual reality (VR). Robert is the owner and CEO of Digital History Studios, and has been a 3D cinematic animator and compositor for the past 24+ years, 12 of which have been in the computer gaming field. He has worked on several high profile games such as Sid Meier's Civilization IV, Sid Meier's Pirates, European Air War and many other history-oriented titles.

Join us for an evening of geeking-out with these professionals thriving in the emerging field of Virtual Reality; from concept through production, we'll discuss the process of creating compelling VR work that is meaningful, educational and impactful.

The event will be in ENGLISH and include two case studies followed by a Q&A.

6:00pm – 7:00pm – Network

7:00pm – 8:30pm – panel

8:30pm – QA

In 2016, Navteca was invited to SXSW Eco to showcase their 360 VR content and was selected for the Top 10 VR Video Exhibit by the Newseum. Navteca has been an early leader in pioneering the use of next-generation VR technology for science and Shayna has presented VR for science at the American Geophysical Union (AGU), Supercomputing (SC16), Earth Science Information Partners (ESIP), and at NASA, NOAA, and the Naval Research Laboratory. Navteca was honored by NASA Goddard Space Flight Center to be named as the Subcontractor of the Year for 2016 as recognition for their work in VR for Earth science.
