We're a friendly group of adult men and women of all ages and from all walks of life, some of whom work, study or live in East London but many who don't. Our ages range from early twenties to late forties but we accept (and have) adult members of all ages.
As well as encouraging reading, it's a fantastic way to meet people and our meetings are great fun!
We meet in the East Village, Stratford each month to catch-up and discuss books. The discussion is quite lively and we have a great deal of fun!
The COVID-19 pandemic has changed how we do things but it reminds us how much we all still need, as the sociologist Ray Oldenburg put it, a "third space" (https://www.pps.org/article/roldenburg) given that, for many of us, our first and second spaces (home and work) essentially merged in 2020.
Although Zoom, Microsoft Teams and other video-conferencing services have been invaluable for many, "Zoom fatigue" is real as is social isolation as a consequence of long-term working from home (or, if you prefer, "living at work"). Therefore, we have chosen to remain an IRL (https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/irl) book club and not become a virtual one.
Stratford Book Club follows current applicable regulations and guidance to protect members and the public from COVID-19. In other words, until herd immunity for COVID-19 has been achieved in the UK through an effective vaccine:
• We will look to meet in external venues;
• Social distancing must be observed at our events;
• Anyone with symptoms of COVID-19 or who may have been in recent contact with anyone with COVID-19 should not attend our meetings;
• Face masks are permitted; and
• Close physical contact, e.g. handshakes or hugs should be avoided.
