Curb Daylighting & Hangout: Chalking the Curb RED - Pacific Beach
Details
🚸 Tactical Urbanism Action Day
đź“… When: Saturday, October 25th 10 AM - 11 AM
📍 Where: Pacific Beach Fish Shop
👥 Who: Anyone who wants to take part
🧰 How: Participants will be put in groups of 2-5 and we will spread out along the blocks North/south of Grand and work our way West toward the ocean for 1 hour. After the hour is up, head back to PB Fish Shop to drop off materials and to hang out, cool off, and grab some lunch with us. Each group will receive flyers and large red chalk to "daylight". Materials will be picked up from a central coordination point.
Participants are encouraged to purchase and materials as a donation to our efforts.
Materials Needed (we have some, but may not have enough for everyone):
IRWIN STRAIT-LINE Marking Chalk, Standard, Red
4" Paint Roller and extension pole (so you don't have to bend over)
4" Paint Roller Cover for Rough Surfaces
Empty 1 gallon paint buckets with lids
The Strong Towns Approach to Problem Solving includes regularly taking the smallest action toward building community. Daylighting is a critical step towards making neighborhoods walkable and safe but the city can't paint the curbs red fast enough to make every intersection safe. It will take them years. This is a hands-on, community-powered event focused on daylighting intersections in walkable neighborhoods to increase visibility and pedestrian safety—especially with California’s AB413 daylighting law now in effect.
Groups document their work and send photos via the post event survey to be sent to all participants. That’s it—quick, impactful, and 100% community-led.
After: Participants are invited to come back to our starting point after to hang out, discuss, and celebrate taking meaningful direct action. This is a low-key, high-impact action. The goal is to make streets safer through visibility and community engagement. We’ll share photos afterward to celebrate the work.
Please only RSVP if you're committed to attending—our coordination depends on reliable participation.
We'll follow up with corridor/intersection assignments once we have enough volunteers signed up.
