"We are the first generation to feel the impact of Climate change and the last generation to be able to do something about it" - Barack Obama
On Tuesday 12th October join author of World Wide Waste, Gerry McGovern, and Ovo Energy CTO, Ed Conolly, to hear how technology is accelerating global warming and the actions we need to take urgently to help ensure a positive future for generations to come.
Gerry McGovern
Gerry has published eight books. His latest, World Wide Waste, examines the impact digital is having on the environment.
He developed Top Tasks, a research method which helps identify what truly matters to people.
The Irish Times has described Gerry as one of five visionaries who have had a major impact on the development of the Web.
Talk - The Cloud is on the ground
The biggest problem with digital is that most people think it’s invisible, immaterial, and somehow inherently green. Yet, in many ways, digital is the secret accelerant of global warming, encouraging and facilitating a culture of waste never before seen in human history. 90% of data is not used again a couple of months after its first stored, and every year we produce over 50 million tonnes of e-waste, most of which is not recycled. If we want to truly address the climate crisis, we must change the way we look at digital and change the way we use digital.
Ed Conolly
Ed is Group CTO of Ovo Energy, working with the engineering teams on everything from intelligent grid services to real time billing. Ed joined OVO Energy from Wonga.com where he led the UK engineering teams, prior to which he held numerous software engineering roles.
