Myakka River Park is at 13802 State Road 72, Sarasota, Florida

This loop hike will cover about 11 to 12 miles, mostly on hiking trails maintained by the Suncoast Chapter of FTA. We’ll meet in the parking area just past and to the right of the entry station off state road 72. The park opens at 8:00 am and there can be a line of cars waiting by then, so please turn into the park and get in line before 8:00. You don’t want to be late. Entry is $4 unless you have a Florida State Park pass. I will have a Florida Trail Event sign out by my truck. About 8:15 we’ll shuttle to the trailhead at Ranch Road.
This hike goes through mixed hardwood hammocks, stands of pine, and lots of open palmetto prairie. It may go clockwise or counterclockwise, depending on the temperature. We’ll check out the campsites at Mossy Hammock and Bee Island, and the old cattle dip tank, and talk a little about the park’s history and habitats. There is no potable water available, so you will need to bring at least two liters of water, plus your lunch and snacks. We’ll keep a steady pace of 2.5-3 miles per hour, but take several breaks in the shade and stop for lunch. I’d suggest bringing a seat pad or even a padded envelope to sit on. It’s Florida so you’ll want to be ready for warm weather, rain, bugs, and sun exposure. I don’t expect have to walk through any water or much mud, but then again it’s Florida. Please send me a message if you have any questions.
This hike will be a good warm-up for the January 24 Annual 27 Mile Hike or the February 20 Myakka backpacking trip. Or just a chance to experience Myakka if you’re not doing the backpacking trip. It’s a rewarding hike, but not an easy one. If you have not done any hikes of this length, or have any questions about your ability to keep up or complete it, please reach out to me beforehand.
This is a Florida trail Association event. The FTA requires that you sign a release form before the hike. A copy is below.
