Sunday 8:15 AM – 12:15 PM
Jay B. Starkey Wilderness Park.
105 Wilderness Park Blvd, New Port Richey, FL
Join me for a 10-mile hike with Florida Tail Association – Suncoast Chapter.
Two rivers flow through the park - the Anclote and the Pithlachascotee. Hiking in and around the floodplains near the rivers is an amazing experience. Keep in mind the dry season is October through March.
About/Details: We will meet at parking lot 8 area prior to 8:15AM at Shelter 5 which is along parking lot 8. Restrooms are available off of the parking lot.
Parking Lot 9 is a good option if lot 8 is full.
The group will leave parking lot 8 area at 8:15AM and head towards orange blazed trail and the Anclote River.
We will walk about 4-miles to the Anclote River and loop back 4.5 miles to Shelter 5 (total event 10 miles). The group will stop back at parking lot 8 / /Shelter 5 for a 15 min lunch / snack / water / bathroom break before heading to the Pithlachascotee River 1.5 miles on the Nature Trail.
Expect: Mostly shaded but some areas of sun. Some tall grass and mud.
This is a very popular area for road biking, running, and walking, so you'll likely encounter other people while exploring. Dogs are welcome but must be on a leash.
Challenges include deep sand, mud, lack of shade, bugs and heat exposure. No water along the way. Bring water, sunscreen, a snack / lunch and good footwear. Dress according to the weather.
Come get acquainted with the FTA and enjoy a hike.
