This is an advanced level hike. You are expected to know how to prepare for a hike in dense, primitive Florida wilderness. ASK IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS.
This is a one of my favorites in the month of May. Generally being our driest month, we have the opportunity to take a serene, surreal, seldom traveled walk in the woods.

Total distance will be about 9 miles

This will start out as a normal hike leaving from Hole in the Fence.
Sometime after we cross the power lines, we head off trail and head E/SE through the river floodplain. We'll just meander around, maybe to the river, back through the cypress, maybe go in circles, who knows?

In this section there is NO trail. It may involve bushwacking through dense vegetation ..This is a nice time for QUIET peaceful sauntering about

We will end up at the familiar River Overlook - We will take our main break here and then head back.

Proper footwear, trekking pole(s) suggested....there will be many roots and cypress knees. You must bring minimum one quart / liter of water. A whistle may be handy if you get separated from the group out on the floodplain.

It can be a rather surreal experience indeed!

Possible risks from participation include, but are not limited to:
Injury from a trip & fall, venomous snakes, stinging insects, venomous spiders, wildlife encounters, heat stroke, hypothermia, noxious vegetation, weather related injury, insect or airborne transmissible virus and disease, smoke inhalation, wildfire, falling trees.

Please check your bicycle before arriving, especially your tire pressure. Your bike should be in good working order, and tires inflated the morning of the event. All other issues we address on the fly.

We will be cycling the Good Neighbor Trail in Brooksville, FL. The trail is approximately 10 miles, and we will be doing an out-and-back ride for a total of approximately 20 miles.

Covering 10.1 miles from the Withlacoochee State Trail to downtown Brooksville, the Good Neighbor Trail is the newest section in the connectors created for the state-spanning Coast to Coast Trail under development. Yay!

We will meet at the Brooksville terminus: the 1885 Train Depot Museum on Russell Street and then ride the trail to where it connects with the Withlacoochee State Trail

The first portion of the trail wanders through some older neighborhoods, and then after crossing US 98 within sight of the Coney Island Drive Inn restaurant, we enter a long tunnel of trees. One of my favorite parts of this trail is when it goes through the Croom Tract, where a couple of times, the Florida Trail crosses the Good Neighbor trail. If you hike the Croom forest, you will recognize these familiar crossings. We will break as needed for water and take a longer water and fuel break at the intersection of Withlacoochee Trail and Good Neighbor Trail and then head back to the depot. There is NO water on the trail. You need to bring water and plenty of it it is hot out there! If you do not have water with you for the ride; you will not be riding with the group, sorry.

Helmets are recommended and required for anyone under 16 years of age. All skill levels and bicycles are welcomed. We will be riding at a pace of 10 - 15 MPH, but you’re welcome to ride faster or slower. Most importantly is that you’re confident in your ability to ride a total of 20 miles and to have fun!

Bringing water, snacks, sunscreen, and anything else you need to be comfortable.

I understand that bicycling involves certain risks which I am prepared to fully assume for myself. I will follow all the traffic laws. I agree to waive all claims I may have against this meetup and host for damages or injuries sustained as a result of participating.
