Serenova Tract Hike (5.8 miles RT)
Details
Curious about the Serenova tract in Land O’ Lakes?
Part of the J. B. Starkey Wilderness Preserve, builders had planned a 6,500-home community called "Serenova." But it was not to be. It was instead purchased by the state in the late 1990s - to save the wetlands and for the construction of the Suncoast Parkway. (Much of the tract is wet during the rainy months, but right now it's nice and dry!)
Serenova is home to wildlife, old cypress stumps from logging of years-gone-by, and the remains of a 19th-century home (rumored as one of Al Capone's hideouts).
The route consists of wide paths and old roads. The most popular Serenova route is a lollipop loop but we will do half that route; an up and back to avoid the soul-sucking firebreaks and mile walking the power lines. We will hike to the homestead, take a break by the water and return the same way - taking a few minutes on the way back to check out the equestrian/primitive campground.
Bring a hat, sunscreen and plenty of water as this route has lots of sun! Consider joining me after the hike for an early lunch at Beef O'Brady's!
